The store that never closes

Urgency is the most reliable thing I know for getting work done.

Give me a deadline and I'll hustle. A brief due Friday, a closing on the 30th, a client call at four that I haven't (yet) prepared for. The pressure is fuel for speed, and speed feels godlike.

Which is why it's so hard to notice what it does to a career that has no sharp edges. Deadlines end. A practice doesn’t.

There's no closing on the work of being a lawyer. The store never closes. At any hour there is something on the list that a careful person would agree needed to be done no matter where you are or what you are doing.

Urgency doesn't have an off switch in this profession. It has a dimmer, and we're the ones holding it.

The same drive that got you through law school, that made you the person a partner calls at 8 PM at home before Thanksgiving, that built whatever you have built.

It's also the reason you can't remember the last evening you spent without the quiet tension of unfinished matters.

No one is coming to lock up for you. At some point, you have to reach for the dimmer yourself, turn the little sign on its chain to Closed, and let the store sit dark until morning.

The work will keep. You might not.

A lesson in kindness
Over the weekend I went to two charity events for a family friend who died at 18 from a rare cancer. It's common to embellish the departed, but this kid was special.   He was handsome, tall, strong, fit. A full ride to a well-known university to play baseball. His place in the baseball community is part of why he was so popular, but what people talked about this weekend, as they did when he was...
Are you a tool?
In 1994, I was a second-year law student living at home and my father was dying.   I was sitting in a waiting room at Sloan Kettering on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, waiting for my father's chemotherapy session to end. There were little children getting chemo, wearing colored turbans because their hair had fallen out.   I was stressed about law school, wondering if I even wanted to be in l...
The Weight
Lawyers have an escape plan. The bait shop. The ski bum winter. The cupcake bakery. The vineyard. The trailer by the water.   We laugh about it at bar events. We don't laugh about it at 2 a.m.   Mine was a trailer by a marina. I'd quit and wash boats. One morning I'd open the door to that trailer and see a palm tree lit by a streetlight.   And at that moment, the universe would reveal itself to...

The Pathological Lawyer Letter

You're good at hard. Too good. This is the letter for the lawyers who don't know what to do with a slow week, a quiet inbox, a life that isn't on fire. You are not managing a crisis here. You're being asked to just live, and that's the harder skill.
